Description:
Rather small, dashing accipiter, with very finely dark- streaked throat without mesial streak and very thin legs. Male has dark slate-grey upperparts and reddish-orange barring on underparts. Female is dark brown on upperparts, with dark brown barring on underparts. Juvenile has dark brown upperparts and barred underparts.
Distribution:
Common summer visitor and resident in all the districts of Gilgit-Baltistan. Wide range of open woodland, scrub forest, wooded cultivations, oak and high-altitude coniferous forest, sometimes above the tree line up to 4500m.
Behavior:
Tends to hunt in clearings, on edges of woods or in sparsely wooded areas. Hunts stealthily, trying to surprise prey; often flies using vegetation for cover, or makes short flights between concealed perches. Almost exclusively hunts on small and medium-sized birds, very rarely feeds on small vertebrates. Captures many fledglings and nestlings.
